It's Good To Be OLD

I don't think of myself as old.  I know I am (big sigh), but I don't feel like it.  I'm absolutely SURE I'm only in my 50's!!  So when they said seniors could go to Safeway between 6 and 9 am, BEFORE anyone else is allowed in the store, I had no intention of going.  Shocked as I was that this was going to happen, I am NOT a senior.  I'm sure I just ran two marathons last week.
Well ... my memory really isn't failing THAT bad ... I didn't run any, but I did take stock of my cupboard.  I have lots of canned tuna and chicken, with no mayo or seasoning to go with it.  Maybe I'll make one more trip to the store.

Okay, I guess I am old, because they let me in the door before 9:00.  Surprisingly, the produce section was about half full.  I made a trip around the corner to see actual packaged meat.  I applauded the crew who was still stocking the shelves.
What a surprise to even find 5 sacks of flour on the shelf, but only four packets of yeast.  Arizona must be making bread like crazy.  It's good to be old-ish ... I snagged a bag of flour.  I took three of the yeast packets, figuring to leave at least one.  A gentleman came up behind me asking for yeast.  Oh no he said .... this is all there is?  I gave him one of mine so we each had two.  He was a happy camper and thanked me.  It just pays to be nice.
As I rounded the next corner, there was even bread still on the shelf.  The thought occurred to me to check out the soap aisle.  WOW .... I scored a bottle of dish washing liquid!  Is this not crazy in our world that you are thrilled to find a bottle of soap?  Sadly by the time I was done, the hoarders were in the building, raking everything from the shelves and checking out two full-to-overflowing baskets each, with no thought of anyone else.

When I got home, I went for a walk in my back yard again.  I have to say, this not getting out much and talking to someone other than my dogs, is quickly getting old.
These pictures are from a couple days ago.  The lavender flower above is only half an inch wide.  Tiny little beauties you almost don't even see.  These yellow blossoms are even smaller.  This whole plant is only about 4 inches tall.
As to the toilet paper crises ... it's good to have an RV.  I have plenty, but decided to gather it up from here and haul it home, just in case.  That's when it hit me!!  I have been grumbling about all the boxes of stuff riding in the back of my Jeep, left over from the RV rally.  Hey ... I have 2500 thin cheesy napkins.  WHO NEEDS TP??  Yes, I will pay for whatever I have to use, but think that won't come to fruition.

In the interest of helping out the restaurants locally, what could be better than an Arizona Pizza Company dinner.  It's Thursday, word of the day being Equinox.
TWINS!!!  I ordered not one, but TWO pizzas.  I just packaged them up and stuck them in the freezer.  Lunch and dinner for the next eight days!!!  Nutrition at it's finest!
I have heard hoarding is not near as bad in California, however one of our local detectives was diagnosed with the virus as he testified in a murder trial.  Within the day, a second detective was at the hospital.  A mistrial was declared, with everyone in the room quarantined immediately, including the judge.  So TWO confirmed cases in our County.  Let the hoarding begin!

Life goes on ... it's a little harder when you  have no one to talk to the entire day.  I discoed with Jonathan yesterday while counting my blessings.  I have to say the puppies think they are in Heaven.  They get to sit with Mom ALL DAY LONG!!!  I'll be on the couch!

  1. So far we are still not hit hard with hoarding here...might be that the distribution centers were stocked up with lots of goods to handle all the snow birds (Canadian ones have nearly vanished), Spring Breakers (Governor just told them to all go home), and Sports Enthusiasts (Golf Tourney canceled, St Petersburg grand prix canceled, Spring Training canceled...list goes on and on) that the store is still getting all it needs each day from truck deliveries.

And it could be worse...you could have picked Salt Lake City for your second home and you have felt the largest earthquake you ever felt. My daughter was within 20 miles of the epicenter...shook the heck out of her, which with her brain trauma, was not good. Thank goodness an past roommate took her in for a few days further north where she can't feel the aftershocks as much. BTW: The news has hardly covered this story...a 5.7 earthquake 18 miles from the center of a large city...little damage and no injuries to speak of makes it a non-story, so they stick with their "Fake News" instead. Just saying....

    1. It is funny how the news just skimmed over it. It was a huge earthquake for them causing lots of damage. I didn't know your daughter was staying there. I'm glad she's okay and can stay with friends. California has panic written all over it. I called a couple of people and all the stores are out of food, meaning everyone is going from store to store, possibly spreading germs all the way.

  2. You'll have to get there earlier to get a better selection.
Our stores only give Seniors an Hour and they didn't even stock the shelves.
Be Safe away from the crowds and Enjoy talking to Jonathan.

    It's about time.

    1. Stores are trying to keep something on the shelves here, but it depends on their truck deliveries. It seems the west coast has been hit hard with the panic bug.

  3. You might want to buy your ammunition before you leave Arizona California is running out of ammo
And from what I've heard so are the fire arms
But maybe that might be a good thing maybe some of the hoarders and shoot themselves in the foot then they'll need all the toilet paper and hot water

    1. It's true ... my gun shop is sold out. I don't think the politicians expected that one.

  4. We haven't had much hoarding where I live either.(TX) There was a run on Clorox & TP when I shopped last week, but I didn't need those since I already buy TP in bulk, & only then because I am picky about the brand (Charmin UltraGentle or something like that, they keep changing the name) & it's always hard to find.

I went to the grocery store this morning & they had everything I wanted except sugar (I use demerara or turbinado for coffee, so the shelves aren't often packed with those anyway). There were hundreds of bottles of bleach on the floor lining the aisles, though. Seemed more like it was management's way of sending a psychological message to shoppers that their supply lines were functioning just fine. Everywhere I went - the bakery, fruits & veg sections, egg case & cold cut racks - were as bountiful as usual. So I dunno, things seem to be getting back to normal here before we really had the chance to go as bonkers as neurotic east coasters, darnit.

I did notice that there were a lot of older people shopping early this AM though. Hmmmm. Now that I read here that mornings are for seniors, I'm kinda insulted they didn't card me at the door! Now I'm thinking I ought to go back & stock up on all the facial moisturizer I can find.

(That'll give local media a story, too: Coming up next on News at 5, we seem to be fine in basic supplies in our area, but oddly in this part of Texas there's been a stampede on Nivea before noon!) 😜

    1. It's funny how each section of the country is acting differently. Ours is a new grocery store, so they have not been stocking up because stuff didn't sell quickly. At this point they are WAY behind. Some stores are actually carding people, but not here ... yet!! I have plenty of food, so I'm not worried. I am NOT a picky eater. Eventually the stores will get restocked, but it may take a month.

  5. Not sure why anyone would buy yeast, but I'm not a very good cook. I've got down steak, potatoes and beans. And of course pudding and whip cream. I figure I can live on that. I still feel young enough to push those young people around so I'm going to stay away from the old crowd. :))) (third one is my sagging chin) Me and Yuma are a team. Don't need anyone else. Just us two in the spacious White Lion.

    1. That's pretty much how I feel Doug. I bought yeast to make bread. It's not even on my "okay to eat" list, but Jonathan LOVES bread. My plan is to stay away from the panicked crowd. Just me, my puppies and my bird!!!

  6. Sounds like you are doing the right things, Nancy and your children are happy. Living in our rv fulltime has helped us as I've always kept the freezer full. We have enough meat for a while and enough dry and canned goods. Hopefully this doesn't go on for too long. :( Stay healthy.
PS - we are kinda old but still feeling young!

    1. Well I don't think we are old at ALL!!! Glad you made it back to Canada safe and sound. I'm sure Black Beauty won't mind waiting a little while for a fix. Relax and enjoy!!!

  7. Nope, we're not old at all!! But if age plays into and you can get a discount or special shopping hours use that age button!! LOL. Those pizzas look amazing!! There's so MANY trucks on the road, sure can't figure why those shelves aren't stocked more often.

    1. Yup I'm playing the AGE card!! I agree ... trucks seem to be in abundance, but crazy people are buying up everything they can fit in their basket instead of sharing. So sad to see the actual mindset of our country now.
