Buggy In Blue Springs!!

No one ever mentions the bugs you find as you travel across the U.S., so I'm going to be the first.  Let me say right up front that I HATE bugs of any kind.  In California, I only have to deal with black widows.  The new home sprays that are out now take care of the widows quite nicely.  I do give my dogs heart worm medicine (mosquitos) since I travel so much, at a cost of around $80 for three months, including the vet visit.  Yes, we have NO fleas.  They say it's because so many people use Advantix or Frontline that the populations have been kept in check.  I'm thinking it's probably a weather and time-of-the-century thing.  I'm sure they'll be back at some point.
All across Arizona, New Mexico and into Texas, it was watch out for the snakes and scorpions, especially when you take your dogs out for a walk or you are geocaching.  I didn't see any of these, so our trip through those states was bug and critter free.  I LIKE that ... the worst thing we might have run in to were some ants.

THEN, we landed outside Kansas City Missouri in Jackson County Blue Springs Campground.  At first, it was relaxing, with the exception of the electrical problems I kept having.  It was THEN that the tick population exploded!!  I found one crawling on my leg ... then one stuck in my foot!!  If this gives YOU the creeps, how do you think I felt???  I checked the dogs from top to bottom and they appeared fine.  Yesterday morning, I looked down to find a nice very tiny but FAT tick laying on the bathroom floor.  I don't want to gross you out, but I discovered it had come from my side.  I had a heart attack, following by an anxiety attack on the heals of a panic attack on the way to a mental breakdown!!
Thinking it must have come in with the dogs, I made a rush trip to Petsmart for some Frontline Plus flea and tick medication.  It was almost $100 for 3 months, but I didn't care.  Upon closer inspection, I found one tick on each dog.  With their medication in place, I breathed a sign of relief ...... entirely too soon!!

With our second reservation at this park taking effect, I moved over to the newer electrical service side, where BOTH of my air conditioners work AT THE SAME TIME!!  YAY for good power!!  See, it's NOT my rig!!!

THEN came the final attack!!  Since the laundry (only one machine) is just across the way, I decided to wash my sheets and towels there, while Barbara and Tom went into town with their eights loads.  That would turn out to be the mistake of the day.  I left my empty laundry bag on the floor where I'm sure some critters hitched a ride back to my rig.  This morning I woke up to six bites from "something" located from head to toe.  Remember when I said I love it here??  I take it back ... I hate it!!  There's nothing that bothers me more than BUGS and this country seems to have more than it's share!!  As I reregistered yesterday for the new site, the camp host told me this was the worst year EVER for ticks.  Thank you, and welcome to Missouri.

Pardon me while I itch and twitch, I feel that total mental breakdown coming on .........

  2. Yes Nancy, you HAVE to watch out for Chiggers...very small but their bite will itch for days and days. You might want to get something like "off" or another repellent that you can spray on your shoes, legs, pants....that will keep chiggers and ticks off of you, or at least mostly off of you.

    1. My new perfume is "Cutter" insect spray with Deet!! Not everyone loves it, but that's okay ... as long as it keeps the bugs off!!

  3. Just got out of the ER with Jax. He had a big, what I thought and looked like a mosquito bite yesterday, that I noticed but just assumed he was prolly allergic. Well today I noticed this bullseye rash has formed from that bite. I immediately knew this was a tick bite and a rash that coincides with Lyme disease. I flew him into the ER and the docs said this was a picture perfect Lyme disease rash and gave us antibiotics to start treatment. The doctors were impressed that I had caught this so early before any real signs of the infection (flu like symptoms) so I wanted to share these pics of what to look for. Normally, Lyme disease is very rare from a tick bite but they are so bad this year you really need to be watching If you would like to share this status so others know what to look for, please feel free!
