My Little Old Man

So here's my best Bud Cooper, hanging out in the van.  I've been noticing things for awhile ... tired, sleeping a lot, not as active.  So when the real symptoms started to happen, I was pretty concerned.  This kid is over 16 years old, and has traveled all over Alaska and all the way to Maine with me.  He and Miss Jessie were the best companions a girl could have.

Poor baby ... he was wiped out.

And so when I found this animal hospital in Yuma that had something like 1500 favorable reviews, I made the call.  Ray was kind enough to drive me.  I think he regretted that when it took three hours.

So here we are, sitting waiting for the vet.  Here's what we found out.  They did a blood test that showed he was within range everywhere but the pancreas.  His numbers are not off the chart, but are above normal, meaning he has pancreatitis.  That is what she thinks is causing all the stomach problems and vomiting.  That in turn, caused dehydration.

He will still live a good life, but I will be required to treat the symptoms for the next two weeks and probably cook his fat free diet at home.  They gave him a shot to stop the nausea, and pills to stop the diarrhea.  They said he would eat them, no problem.  I said you don't know my dog.  He ate all around the food with the powder on it, fought me tooth and nail over the 2mm of gel I tried to get down his throat, and it took six treats to get that teeny tiny pill in his mouth, whereupon he spit it out three times.  Just open his mouth you say?  Well that wasn't happening!!

They also gave him fluids for the dehydration, which resulted in us being up every 30 minutes to go outside.  He will be on probiotics from now on, if I can figure out how to hide it in his food.

And so I will be heading back home today.  I prefer he recover from this bout at home where he is more comfortable.  Once he heals up, we can travel again, but he will never overcome the main problem.  He's had a long and spoiled life, so I will continue to spoil him rotten!!  Maybe a year, maybe more or maybe less.  There's just no definite number.

Thank goodness for good Vets, because this could have ended badly.  Yes it was expensive, but he's worth every penny.

I'll see you in Indio this afternoon.

  1. Good you got a diagnosis and you can move forward with a special diet and meds for the time being. Cooper will be happy to be home for recovery and kitters will be happy too.
So nice of Ray to go with you ...that helps when the kid is sick.
Keep us posted Nancy...safe travels going home.
    Praying for both of you.

  4. Well, at least you know what it is. When Skruffy was SO SICK in Alaska, knowing it was Diabetes was both a blessing and a curse. Afraid she would resent the twice daily shots she got worried me a lot, but that changed because Skruffy never showed resentment. Hang in there with Cooper and things will go well...

  8. I'm so glad you went to a vet in Yuma and pleased that you were happy with them.
Cooper is like Gibbs, or visa versa. If there is a pill in that treat, I'll find it and spit it out. I'm getting better at hiding them and holding his head up so it has to go down! haha. I think we are fooling ourselves when we think they DONT hear the vet say, 'give him a pill'. Yah right.
Take care, thinking of you and Cooper. Home, nothing like it when you are sick. Hugs, Nancy.

mention that a few posts ago. He knows when he’s

    1. Thank you Linda. I've been thinking about that for the last few months, knowing how old he is. He is pretty much on borrowed time, but we will keep fighting.

  12. My prayers are with you both. My Maltese was 14, blind from diabetes, given insulin twice a day. He had gotten so sick, would not eat. Had to carry him around so we made the decision it was time, vet agreed. It's been 4 years and my heart still hurts. I can't bring myself to get another one. Praying...

  13. Many poultry companies (Costco rotisserie chicken!) use a process called "plumping" or "enhancing," where raw chicken is injected with a solution that often contains saltwater, chicken stock, and other additives. Salt can cause pancreatitis in dogs.

    1. I've heard that recently. No more Costco chicken for Cooper.

  14. Can you use peanut butter on the pills? Also rub the throat slightly when you put the pill in his mouth. Might make him swallow. Hoping he gets better soon. Mary Klinger.

    1. Well ... recently peanut butter has been found to have ingredients that are very bad for dogs. I'll have to find a brand that is ok to give them. He has just never been food motivated his entire life. I'll try the throat rub.
