A Small Costco Run

We could not have asked for a more beautiful day.  Cold in the morning, warm in the afternoon.  So warm in fact that I decided to sit outside and read.  Yeah that's not true, but it sounded good.  This little note sounded familiar, but I was determined to stay on the diet.  No Cadburys have entered the house ... so far away.  Though I'm pretty sure there are still 10 of those school candy bars and maybe 15 snickers left, I'm ignoring their "snickers" from the bottom of the fridge.

We had a beautiful sunrise, just enough to get me up and running.  It's Costco shopping day.  I was second at the door at 8:15.  It opens at 9:00.

I made a beeline ... like everyone else ... to the eggs.  There were so many people I barely got my 5 dozen before the room was full of shopping baskets.  Of course no one left a way out, and I had a terrible time turning around.  It was the second coming of toilet paper!!

Seriously folks, there were five pallets, stacked as tall as I am.  Costco is making a fortune on eggs, being the biggest supplier and charging $5.00 a dozen (normally $2).  So if there's an egg shortage, WHERE is Costco getting them?  I would certainly NOT want to be the truck driver bringing them in.  Can you imagine an entire load of eggs on your truck?

Then it was off to roasted chickens.  Unfortunately, they were on the opposite side of the egg line, and no one would let me through.  No kidding .... apparently it's panic egg buying every morning.

Next on the list ... a nice Easter ham.  It's not really for Easter, it's just MEAT, and it's on sale.  I will however, have fun cooking it up for Easter.

I also splurged and got some salmon, though I'm highly disappointed with it.  You used to be able to buy gorgeous skinless salmon.  This was the biggest pain EVER to cut up for freezing.  That skin was SO thick that even my sharpest chef knife wouldn't make a dent.  I had to use a box cutter.  This I can share with Mr. Cooper as a treat.

I was so proud ... that is ALL I had in my basket.  Until I went for the Skinny Dippers, a peanut butter cup alternative with dark chocolate and few calories.  Of course they didn't have them.  Costco is like now you see it, now it's gone forever.  I saw this product advertised in several places, so decided to give it a try.

I am not a coconut fan, but you can't taste that at all.  It's like a chewy marshmallow covered in dark chocolate.  I'm not a fan of dark chocolate either, but by golly these are not bad at all.  Better for you than a snickers bar anyway.  Of COURSE they have more carbs than I wanted, so we shall see.  I'm actually not craving sugar like I normally do.  What's up with that?

Back home, I got a call from the embroidery lady.  It's done.  Gosh, that was fast.  I was kind of holding my breath that it came out okay.  WOW!  Wasn't I surprised that it's PERFECT!  Amazing!  What a great job.  But then .......................

I asked how much, since previously she said she couldn't tell me until she finished one.  I know my mouth dropped open and YIKES came out!!  You're not going to believe this.  She charged me $130 for this one piece of fabric and I supplied the fabric.  I'm sure I passed out before squeaking out "say that again?"  $130 ... Cash only.

Good grief ... well that cancels the other five pieces I had in the truck.  Not having enough cash, I had to go to the grocery store for salad and some moola.  I paid her and left, making a panic call to the Veterans Chairman.  I won't tell you what HE said.  And so the hunt is STILL on for an embroidery person.  Big sigh.

The rest of the day was uneventful.  I deboned the chicken ... Mr. Cooper loved that part since he got a chicken dinner, and later I pulled a few weeds in the yard out front.  I still haven't gotten that sprinkler replaced though I carried the old one in my purse all day.

Today I'll be off to the Stag Picnic at the Elks RV Park.  Members only get a big fat steak and all the beer they can drink for free.  As you can imagine, it's always packed to the brim.  I'll skip the beer.

  1. Left a comment at the end of yesterday with a recipe link.
I make this instead of oatmeal now. Blueberries or fruit of choice, a couple small spoons of that full fat, Greek yogurt, unsweetened coconut flakes, broken up pecans or healthy nut of choice, a few DROPS of real vanilla, a good sprinkle of nutmeg, some cacao nibs I found on iherb. Simple ingredients, buy non-GMO. Buying less of everything else leaves more money for good stuff, pistachios & macadamias, honey & maple syrup. Stuff I NEVER used to buy. Spending less or about the same. Haven't bought flour & sugar for a while now. You have to read labels these days, even pickles. They put corn syrup in my favorite, but found some with just 5 ingredients a shelf above. Sorry to be so long. I'm helping :o)

    1. It's too bad we have to look at the ingredients on absolutely everything now. They put crazy things in the food we eat.

  2. We gave up our Costco membership years ago. The grocery stores have enough "Sales" to cover their savings, and we don't need a warehouse to store things.
I also have to resharpen my knives after cutting the Salmon down to portion sizes. Saw a trick On-Line. Freeze the fish with the skin and fat in tack, then pour boiling water over the skin before thawing the fish. The skin and most of the fat will separate, leaving only the met of the fish to cook.
The cost of the Embroidery sounds reasonable for all that much detail.
    Stay Safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.

  3. Eggs are high here too. People walk over each other to get to them at Costco. Hope they come down soon.
    Beautiful weather here this morning.
    Happy Saturday!

  4. You did good at Costco with sticking to your list. Maybe one of the fundraisers at the Elks could contribute to the embroidery cost? It's probably more labour intensive than assumed. The work looks well done.

    1. Both of our money makers donated already, but I'm hoping they can plunk down a little more. Really, I think I can get it done less expensive, I just have to find the right place.

  5. Wouldn't it have been nice, if the embroidery gal had given a discount due to the fact that this will be given to a veteran? In the "old days," this would have been done with no charge.

Back when Price Club (now Costco) first opened, we called it the $100 Club. Now you can't get your foot in the door for a $100. I order non-perishables on-line and having it delivered to my door is wonderful. Spend $100 and no shipping fee with generally two day delivery.

    1. Really? I didn't know they did delivery! I'll look into it. It's always over $100!!

  6. Why does the embroidery have to be so large? You could put all the information in a smaller rectangle. I agree, you need to find someone to do it as a donation. Maybe if thread and fabric are provided they would donate their time for a write-off.

    1. I think it's too large also. I mean it's beautiful, but could be done much smaller and less expensive I think.

  7. Mr, Ed said …Boy, did she see you coming?$$$
Embroiderers often charge by the number of stitches per garment as well as thread color changes. You could expect to pay anywhere from $5-$10 each for custom-embroidered ball caps to $20-$30 each for golf shirts, in addition to a digitizing fee. Your biggest issue was you have one of. So you can see how your cost will go up, but not to the height of the price you paid . As for the salmon Leave the skin on, It holds the meat together , and when you eat it skin down On your plate Or if you leave the skin up after you cook it, It won’t break apart then peel it After

    1. There's a lot of work and time involved in that. My machine will do some embroidery work, but not letters. It's beautiful, just way too expensive for a lap quilt.

    1. If $20 will do a small ball cap, I can see that anything this big would be expensive ... it's just way too much for a small lap quilt.
