Nothing ... Nada ... Zilch ...

Every once in awhile, there's absolutely nothing going on ... NOTHING!!  That's what happened at my house yesterday ... NOTHING ... just like this picture!

There was a couple of little things, but none were worth writing home to Mom about.  I had CAKE for breakfast, that was fun!  Somebody's got to eat that cloud of strawberry deliciousness.
Mostly, I just sat around waiting for the Giants baseball game against the Dodgers to begin.  With rain still falling until around noon, I couldn't plant anything in the yard.  I wandered around the house trying to come up with something other than dusting the furniture, to no avail.

I made up a list of all the things I want to photograph, like the Painted Ladies in San Francisco and the beach in Monterey, all of which are a good two hours drive away.  I got as far as the tiny grocery store a mile from my house to pick up sesame oil for a Korean BBQ dish I want to try.

Once the game started, Cooper, Jessie and I were entrenched on the couch for the rest of the day.  After the first ten minutes when the Dodgers got 5 runs to zero, I wanted to turn it off!  Instead, I began texting my old baseball buddy Peter.  We kept ourselves occupied through the first few innings until the Giants made a HUGE comeback ... home run after home run.  Whew!!  We won ... but that was close!

It felt good to be back in baseball!  I was a diehard season-ticket-holding fan for ten years before the "big breakup" which killed my enthusiasm for baseball (and just about everything else) completely.  It's been eight years and I'd forgotten how much I enjoy a good game, whether at home or at the park!!
Time for dinner, I made a GIGANTIC mess with oil spatters in the kitchen when I browned a pork tenderloin, then tossed it in the oven to finish off.  This one is pretty hard to mess up ... it came out very nice, accompanied by roasted brussels sprouts.  The leftovers will become Korean BBQ even though the recipe calls for beef.  Stay tuned for THAT one!

Just for the heck of it I got on the internet and checked out properties along the coast of California.  Ha!!!  No worries about me moving there!  I couldn't find anything under $850,000 with 90% of them listed at over $1million.  I closed my computer and went to bed.

Here's hoping today is a little more exciting!

  1. Hi Nancy-

Could hardly wait to go over to our local Walmart store this morning. My computer showed that they sell Duff cake mixes. Long story short, I bought the last box for seventy cents from their 'clearance' shelf. --Discontinued?-- It's called "Pink Camouflage", not quite the same as your "Pink Cadillac". Can't wait to try it! My aunt in Minnesota used to make Divinity and give it as Christmas gifts in metal cans. Haven't heard anyone else mention that confection, 'till you.

I look forward to reading your blog here in Chicago every morning.

I've been reading Todd Borg's books. I started with his first book and am now up to his sixth one. Great stories from the Lake Tahoe area! Recommended, along with all of Nick Russell's Big Lake adventures from Arizona!

Have a great week. Looking forward to your next posting.

    Regards,
    -Robert

    1. Hi Robert!! So nice to meet you!! I don't think Duff's cakes have been discontinued, but they probably have pull dates. I'm guessing that's why they put it on the clearance shelf. I hope you like it as much as I did!

We always had divinity at Christmas too, but I've never been able to make it successfully ... it becomes spoon candy!!

I'll check out Todd's books since I'm two pages away from finishing Big Lake Brewpub. Thanks for the tip!

  2. Robert,
Maybe divinity is a Midwest thing. When we lived in Illinois, my Mom and Grandma made it every Christmas season. But, I don't remember Dave's family making it in Minnesota; guess I'll have to ask if they did that before I moved there at age 15.

    1. That may be true Linda, since my grandmothers family was from the Kansas area. I've never made it successfully as it is very sensitive to humidity .... or maybe it was just my cooking skills!!
