Trouble With A Capital T

SURPRISE!  We are still hanging out here in central California, and we did not turn into a beach.  I didn't mention last week we had a tsunami warning, hailing the epic event where California breaks off into the ocean.  That's trouble with a capital T.  If that ever happened, I would have beachfront property.  Woohoo!

Yes it's true ... there was a 7.1 earthquake in the ocean, 40 miles off the coast of Northern California south of Eureka.  Alarms went off everywhere from north to south and as far inland as Sacramento.  That's around 80 miles.  Maybe just a bit of exaggeration on their part about how bad this was going to be.

I'm not sure how that's possible when they only warned folks to stay ONE BLOCK away from the beach.

It did happen previously in about 1974 I think, in Crescent City.  My ex-husband's parents lived there on top of a big hill.  Even by the 90's when I arrived, you could still see the damage it caused.  Lucky for us however, though it was a big earthquake underwater, it was a shallow one, so the resulting tsunami was one four foot wave that didn't even make it to the top of the beach.

Darn ... no beachfront property for me!!

On my way home after the Christmas party, I did get a few pictures of Christmas Light Wars.  This is the neighbor that wants to win.  It is rather hard to get good pictures of all the lights ... maybe a video would work better.  This is one side of the house.

And the front.  Oh but there's more, however a big tree blocks the entire left side and garage.  In case you were wondering, this guy works for PG&E, so I doubt he pays for any of this electricity.

This is the other neighbor side.  They have a beautiful creche scene, with even more angels on the fence behind (out of the picture) and one more on the fountain out front.

And there's more ... this is the front of their house, with one more angel on top of the roof.  It's all amazing in person!

So much for pretty lights, which I don't see much since I'm usually in for the night when it's dark out.

Sunday started out just lovely as I caught up on all the National Final Rodeo rounds I had taped while I was out partying.  Then it was out to check the solar charger on the van once again.  Ummmm the door won't unlock.  ARE YOU KIDDING?  Everything was dead as the proverbial doornail.  Well that's trouble with a capital T!!

Apparently, though it was showing it was working, it was not working at all.  I got out my battery charger, but it was acting funny.  I called Mr. Dan and cried for help.  The charger kept clicking off, even in trickle mode.

At last I got my pickup out and called the neighbor for help.  I'm just afraid I'll fry myself or the van, so he helped me hook it up and I started the truck.  It took several minutes before the van would start.  I let it run awhile until the little voltage gizzy said 14.3 before shutting it off.

By the way, the voltage gizzy does not work unless the engine is started.  The cigarette lighter is not hot until then.

I went back out a little later and started it again.  That's when this popped up.  What the heck?  By now I'm getting a little mad.  I had to look it up, but apparently the right light bulb died or there is an electrical problem.  Not only that, but I have no right turn signal in front or back.

I was hoping it would magically disappear but so far no luck.  Ugh ... another problem, just when I'm getting ready to leave on a trip.  I'll call today, but I don't expect I'll get in to the Mercedes dealership in time, and of course I have to get a ride from someone.  My trip plans may get cancelled.

That certainly put a damper on my week.  Apparently my stars are not aligned!!!  Here's hoping I get lucky!!

  2. I looked up the information on the Crescent City tsunami. I was in Crescent City with my sister and her husband. I know I was a teenager but couldn't remember the year. The tsunami was in March 1964 so we were there in June 1964. The only damage I remember was the parking meters were bent in half. Its like when a person bends over at the waist.
Hopefully you get the van in quickly and it's an easy fix!

  3. I think you will be kicking that van to the curb sooner rather than later. Seems like it is nothing but problems for you.

  4. Boosting is easy, red to red, black to black. You shouldn’t leave your boost vehicle running, if there are any issue with vehicle being boosted it could cause issues with the boosting vehicle, such as blowing up your alternator, etc. Imagine boosting is like taking the battery out of the running vehicle and dropping it in the non starting one, except instead of taking it out you are pulling the power from it via the cables. If the live battery won’t start the dead vehicle after sitting for a couple of minutes, it’s not a battery problem and you should stop trying to start it, you will only kill the good battery.
Some solar panels will pull back power after the sun goes down. It may be a wise idea to disconnect it before dark and hook it back up in the morning.
You could call the dealership and/or Google if the turn signals are linked to the low beam outage. It would give you a better idea about how many issues you actually have to address. Also I would seek out the fuses, check them out to ensure it’s not a simple blown fuse for turn signals.
Just some thoughts of course. Good luck.

  5. Most dealerships have people to drop off and pick up customers that leave their vehicles for repairs. Your batteries should not be dying off due to bad bulbs.
Be Safe and hopefully you can Enjoy your trip.

    It's about time.

    1. Not this time ... it's mostly operator error ... or operator not driving it enough.

  9. Mr. Ed said will you get to Yuma? Why don’t you check with the Mercedes dealer there
Wondering if you left something on your mini solar panel should very easily have taken care of ghosts trickles. If you’re worried about the battery going down when you’re not using it and you’re not using the solar charger, why not hardwire a trickle charger you already have two one for The truck and jeep use one of them.
Where It’s a new vehicle Do you before you leave it Under the canopy storage mode? Why not walk around and double check ((((all))))of your switches
As for Deb’s comment solar panels have a diode that does not allow flow back so the answer is no it doesn’t have Feedback
