An overnight low of 70 degrees doesn't bode well for cool and comfortable days. It was a whopping 103 degrees yesterday at noon. My how ten degrees can change your attitude!
There was no walk-the-dog, and I really wasn't interested in the vegetable hunt ... similar to an Easter Egg Hunt. Pulling all those big leaves full of needles apart to see if there is any surprise underneath just is not fun.
And THEN you are surprised to find one cucumber that was so well camouflaged you didn't see it. It's so big it's full of really huge seeds. BUT WAIT!! Is that a nice big RED Early Girl tomato? Not so early really, but hopefully tasty after she sits on the counter for a day or so. Breakfast is served!!
There was no time to waste however. I have a very good friend who is in dire need of accounting services. When that's not your thing and you are just a good ole boy from the country, you need someone to help. Honestly, I've tried to put this off for years, and now it's mandatory.
Hire a company you say? He's tried that and it just has not worked out. That means this is going to be a blog as sharp as a box of crayons. No pictures and not much fun involved as I dove headfirst into my REAL job.
First up ... get an accounting program on their computer. But wait once again ... they don't have a desktop computer. Yesterday was the first step ... getting one set up in the barn at the ranch. Here's the thing ... all their books have been done by hand at home for 50 years. Yeah .... THAT!
This makes MY job so much more complicated because I haven't used a Windows computer in 15 years. I'm a MAC girl. My saving grace is I'm stubborn as a mule and I WILL figure it out.
And so began the five hour saga of trying to decide which Quickbooks program to get for them. There's no such thing as getting a disc that you download. It's all done online now ... which I hate. After two hours we finally got enough information to know which one to buy. Of course you can't download anything without CODES, which were not forthcoming on the slow internet. After all, we are out in the boondocks.
Now we have a program, but it's nothing like MY old program ... not even kinda sorta! So now I'm learning an entire new accounting program from people who don't speak English and know less than I do. I'm not kidding here ... I had to tell her where to look on HER screen so she could tell me how to find what I was looking for ... a Chart of Accounts entry screen.
By the time we got to that point, he and I were laughing like crazy. If not, I would have been crying!!
FINALLY ... after five hours of passwords, verifications, emails and phone calls, I was able to get three account numbers added. I'm not kidding here ... it's ridiculously complicated.
Having made some headway, I left to drop off some paperwork at the lodge, a long hot trip into town. Too bad there wasn't good news there either. The air conditioner that broke was replaced. It worked for one day, so we are once again without office staff. Oh the fun!!
I landed back at the house where I snuggled with my boy Cooper before realizing it was WAY after my bed time. That matters because I have to be back at the Quickbooks maze this morning, trying to figure out how to enter a beginning balance. Ummm yes I still have FIVE PAGES of account numbers to input before I even START on the boxes of checks.
And then it dawned on me ... you can add Users to this account. I'm sure it will take me an hour to figure out how to do that, but if I get it right, I can work from home. YAY!!! At least I won't have to spend time getting "public presentable " because my Cooper doesn't care!!
I'll be in the red barn ... which is thankfully MAJORLY air conditioned!!! Wish me luck ... and if you speak East Indian, give me a call.
If any one can figure it out it's you.
