When I was 20-something and trying to eek out a living on Capital Hill in Denver Colorado (the neighborhood known for the most murders) I somehow hooked up with the Denver Broncos to become a tour guide for the visiting teams. At that time it was the Baltimore Colts. You cannot imagine being that age around that much muscle and good looks. I was hooked.
It made it SO much more interesting since I actually KNEW some of the players.
The same thing happened with the San Francisco Giants. I went on a lark to a ballgame and actually met some of the players. That was pre-Buster baseball. Once you know the players and watch them come up from Triple A, you feel like they are family.
So today you will find me sitting on the couch at the Chance residence, scarfing up appetizers like a champ while watching every second of the game. I really don't care who wins, but wouldn't it be fabulous if Kansas City wins after 50 years of NOT making it to the Super Bowl?
In other news, I landed at B & B Cactus yesterday morning very early to miss the crowds. A very nice older gentleman picked me up and escorted me around the farm, telling me the name of every single cactus in sight. I can remember NONE of them. I would love to have this four foot tall version, but think I would have a hard time getting it in the RV door.
Let me be the first to tell you that cactus is not cheap!! Good heavens this stuff is pricey. I must admit they do have to take care of it for 3-4 years before it hits the sales floor, but SHEESH!! I walked through their little garden first to get some ideas.
I ended up with exactly THREE plants. Don't ask me the names. I do know one is whale's tongue. Where do they get these names? It took me an hour, but the one tall white one is now planted and I didn't even get stuck ONCE! That's because the nice gentleman told me how to do it.
The next two will be planted this morning before the game. Here's the good part. I no longer require drip irrigation in this section. I don't even have to water them but maybe a couple times a year.
The bad part ... it's supposed to be freezing with possible snow the next two days!! YIKES!!
P.S. The down side of Capital Hill Denver was that my car was stolen the very first week I was there. Surprisingly, I got it back, only to have it stolen AGAIN one week later. It was found stripped down to bare metal the next morning. Oh how I loved that Pontiac GTO!!! It had dual quad carburetors and a Hurst shifter on the floor. That's where I got my race car driving skills which I still practice, although without much success in a Jeep!
I'm sure there are many female football fans but you have the perfect story about why you are! ha ha Enjoy the game.
ReplyDeletecongrats on the new cacti and not getting pricked during the process.
It was fun, but certainly ancient history!!
DeleteMemories are things that will always make us smile.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your Cactus. Try putting a cover over them until they take root.
Be Safe and Enjoy the game.
It's about time.
I will definitely cover the cactus. The cold is coming!!
DeleteI'm ready for some football! I lived in KC that great year so you know who I'm rooting for. Beautiful cactus garden based on your beautiful photos. You shouldn't leave the keys in your Goat. :)) You and I are really alike. I used to race my 900 up Ford Mustang in the quarter mile in my early 60s when I could finally afford breaking things every weekend. Root for da Chiefs!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Doug!!! THE CHIEFS WON!! And I didn't leave my keys in the Goat ... they had one that needed quite a bit of jimmying to turn the ignition. I know because THEY left the key in it when they were done! LOL
DeleteI’m torn,
ReplyDeleteAndy Reid have never won, he has been there a few time but no Super Bowel ring. Back in the day I had a 66 GTO 3 duce’s and a 4 on the floor.
JWM
Oh man .. did you not love that car????
DeleteI think the cactus will be able to stand a wee bit of cold weather. It's not like you're going to get feet of the stuff. Haha
ReplyDeleteFootball is not always a man's sport, I recall watching many games with my hubby and I was more interested than he was. Good games are just fun to watch.
Yup good games keep my attention and keep me out of the fridge!!
DeleteI'm so nervous that my stomach is doing flip flops. It's just a football game....right? Enjoy your new purchases.
ReplyDeleteAnd a GREAT game it was Elva!!!
DeletePut the styrofoam cups on top of the white cactus. If the tips freeze, it won't grow anymore. Many nurseries keep the tips covered all winter. Moving boxes work well over the bigger cacti. We're covering Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
ReplyDeleteI will do that Allison. I saw the cups at B & B .. sure looks funny!!
DeleteJust to let you know you could get the Grand Cherokee V8 with a Hemmi. It feels like my 56 Vet. Just say'n.
ReplyDeleteYou're kidding!!! Wow ... I guess it's going to be a Cherokee for me!!
DeleteI had a '72 Chevy Malibu, but I liked my '65 Austin Healey Sprite the best...both were green.
ReplyDeleteFunny how our generation loved their cars. Nowadays they are more like PEDAL cars!!
