I'm used to the sloppy job guys, so you're not going to believe THIS crew!! They showed up two hours early. Woohoo!!! Maybe they will beat the huge storm that is supposed to land here!!
There was barely a hello before they were unloading pieces and screwing stuff together. These guys weren't messing around.
Dan and I grabbed chairs from the back yard and sat down to watch. Not only did they measure and chalk the lines down the sides to be sure it was straight, they even measured the angles to be sure it was square!! I was impressed before they even laid out a single structural piece.
In no time the trusses were all stacked up and ready to assemble. By the way, they said it would take them about 3 hours to finish. In my head I said "right" ....... but they would soon prove me wrong.
Unlike Dan's project five or six years ago, these guys brought their own tools. For Dan's building, they didn't have a ladder, so he lifted them up with his backhoe bucket to get the roof pieces on. They didn't have a hammer drill either, and burned up THEIR drill trying to attached the metal to the concrete!!
It worked out okay in the end because Dan finished up the building, only having to pay a very small fraction of the original price. I was almost hoping that would happen here!
As you can see, the sky changed considerably from start to finish!
See that guy up on top? Scary!! He was screwing down every single section while the whole thing was shaking. That kid's got guts!! In no time the roof was on, with the sides coming up. The wind came up too ..... we held our breath and checked the radar pics to see if lightning was coming our way.
Luckily (I'm sure because of all your good thoughts) it passed us by as they finished up the sides. They probably used up six or seven tubes of caulking. Every single seam was overlapped a bunch and caulked. The last work was done on the inside, putting in more metal screws to secure the stability. We figured it would take two days to complete. They finished in 3-1/2 hours. These guys have their act together.
I tipped them generously and wrote out the check. If you are interested, the building is made by Interstate Steel from Riverside California. It is 17' wide by 35' long by 12' high. It's the biggest we could possibly squeeze into my space without blocking the garage and is the heavier steel model that can withstand 120 mph winds.
The final cost for the building itself installed was $4,400. Anyone remember the last bid I got from a local contractor of $14,000? The concrete was extra, as was the survey I had to have done because the County's idea of where the property lines were was completely off. I also had to pay extra to get plans signed by an Arizona Architect. Of course that was a new rule this year.
And here she is!!! My baby parked in her new garage out of the blazing sun!! She's a happy camper, as am I. I just can't believe it all went so well and so fast!! There's even enough room to open my slides all the way AND all the bay doors without hitting anything. I may cover the sides to the ground at a later date. And yes, I DID back her in there with plenty of room to spare!
I cannot thank the Chance family enough, because without them, this would never have happened. I would have been in the looney bin after the first conversation with the Building Department. By the way, we DID get a permit and inspections were done.
Special thanks also go out to Dan's son Mark, whose friend did all the concrete work at his request. Mark also took care of all the building inspections by skyping with the building department. How cool is that??
I've already gone outside and admired it eight times. I just can't stop staring at it!! I apologize in advance because you'll probably see a lot more pictures of it!!
I'll be outside in the rig with my thermometer to see just how much cooler it is .... with the biggest smile ever on my face!!
As the saying goes, "one good deed deserves another". The first good deed was your horse trailer gift to us. You could have easily sold it for several thousand $. Marc and I were happy to return the favor, since I know you ran into a dead end with your earlier attempts. The icing on the cake was a competent crew who showed up on time, and finished the job with great attention to detail. It was fun project, and I'm glad it turned out so well.
ReplyDeleteI just can't thank you both enough for getting this done. The difference inside the rig is absolutely amazing!
DeleteCongrats on the new Cover. I remember the frustration you were going through before. Not trying to be a sexist but some Companies try to take advantage of women.
ReplyDeleteIf you close up the sides be certain to leave the ends open for the wind to blow through.
Looks like a special dinner out for Dan and Mark.
Be Safe and Enjoy!
It's about time.
Yes sir Rick .... I think some Ugly Steaks are called for!!!
DeleteLooks great, congrats on the RV port! That is a quick crew and it looks like they knew what they were doing.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jim ... it's just so nice to have a good crew!!
DeleteEven with the incredible $10K discount you ended up with it's not exactly cheap, but it's still a great investment at that price to protect your MH.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of good investments, not only does your motor home now have a spectacular million dollar view, what really may be most impressive about all this is finding out here from your pictures that even your garage - your freaking garage! - has one too! Dayum, girl.
Not a bad view for both of us!! I do love it here and now she's protected against the hot sun!!
DeleteIt's beautiful! So happy for you. And you paid a great price. We had 2 added to our property about 15 years ago and there's not a lot of price difference. And you are brave.....I couldn't watch the guy adding the roof. I know what you will be doing today..... admiring and loving the cover. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI've been looking at prices for a long time. They don't seem to change much. Weird, huh?
DeleteBeautiful RV cover, Nancy, and it looks like they beat the rain!
ReplyDeleteThank you Carol. Yes, they JUST beat the rain. We were very lucky!
DeleteVery nice. You will love it and so will your RV. Congrats!
ReplyDeleteThank you Doug ... I do love it for many reasons!!
DeleteSo very happy for you Nancy...looks GREAT. (Now let's see how much the county increases the value of your home so they can get more taxes out of ya! lol)
ReplyDeleteThat's true for sure. I rather imagine I will take a $10,000 hit on value!!
DeleteExcellent! I'm so happy something went right for you for a change.
ReplyDeleteMe too Linda!! The timing was perfect!!
DeleteIf you get that RV outer there what time is the barbecue/ping-pong tournament
ReplyDeleteCongratulations looks like a winner
Thanks Ed. With no RV it would make a great party space. You can even enclose them completely!!
DeleteGreat news. Enjoy. Lynn Cross
ReplyDeleteThank you Lynn. I do love it!
DeleteCool in more ways than one.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree!!
DeleteThis will be wonderful for you! It looks great. So glad you found a trustworthy contractor that did such a great job.
ReplyDeleteWe hope to do this same thing on our property soon, if we can get a waiver to put our RV on our lot until we build in a few years. Thanks for sharing the information on size and cost. Our rig is 36 feet long so we would extend it a bit since we have plenty of room. It would be so nice to keep the sun off of it, as well as rain and snow. While we are living in it - we would not have sides, but once we move into a house, we would probably close it up as you mentioned.
Definitely check out that company. Their buildings are usually sold by other names, usually from back East. I would contact them directly. They are awesome!!
DeleteWow your RV cover is awesome! Nice to find some guys who have it all together and get it done! The price for the cover installed certainly seems fair to me..I'm sure the concrete and everything else was more expensive! Way to go! Love it!
ReplyDeleteYou are right about the cost, but you can just pour concrete down the sides and not have a concrete slab .. just gravel. That would make it MUCH cheaper.
