That California Thing

Nurse Nancy is still hard at it, honing her caretaking skills.  Be sure and bend your knees when picking up puppies to take them outside.  I have WAY too soft a heart to be in this business.  To see Mr. Cooper enjoying himself like this all day long .......

 BEFORE

And then see this.  It makes me appreciate REAL nurses a lot.  I mean just LOOK at that little face!!

AFTER

So let's take a little break in the action and talk about the latest I heard about California.  If ever there is a screwed up State, this is it in spades.  Not only are they paying immigrants every month just to come in the door, they are now wanting to pay reparations for slavery.

Hmmm my family didn't have slaves EVER, so you're saying you are going to take money from my hard work and pay it to some people who never worked a day in their life?  I'll give you three guesses what that sounds like.

Here's the next thing going on according to a friend who is in the business.  State Farm and AllState insurance companies ... pretty big in California ... have told the Insurance Board they are pulling out of this State and will no longer be writing insurance policies here.

Why you ask?  Because they don't think they are making enough money.  I almost laughed at him since my insurance costs have doubled in the last two years.  They are trying to force the Board to do away with cost limits.  I'm sure there have been lots of claims from flooding this year, but again ... you want to raise MY costs to pay for losses on your policies?  Shouldn't that have been built in to those policies?

You've never had an insurance claim on your house?  Too bad ... they are raising the rates anyway.  In fact, he told me NOT to go out to bid because I could end up with NO insurance.  All this is going to take a lot more investigation on my part ... which is the part I hate.  Just another reason to leave California I guess.

Between that and my "charge", I may just have to find a nice margarita mix to hang out with!

The Vet told me only soft food for the kid.  I've tried that before, and he would NOT eat it.  Even the cooked chicken I prepare is too hard to eat for now.  So off to the pet store I went.  What a surprise to find hardly ANY small dog food that I thought he would eat.  Duck ... fish ... buffalo ... gosh, where's the BEEF?

I finally found only two varieties in small tins to try.  Maybe it's just Petco, but boy are they short on variety.  I waited until Cooper was scratching the rug at the sink.  That means FEED ME.  I plopped some of this in his bowl ... and lo and behold ... HE ATE IT!  Wow ... that's a miracle ... a first in his 13 years of being the most finicky of eaters.

Finally ... if only for a few minutes, he didn't look like he was dying!  EUREKA!!  I see a little bit of progress!!  Yes he still looks for his ball, especially in the mornings, but I ply him with a piece of soft treat that he loves.  Don't tell him, but there's a pill crushed up in that too.

I baked the last of the enchilada casseroles I made with Hatch green chili sauce ... boy do I love THAT stuff ... and parked both of us on the couch.

We spent the rest of the night watching extreme bull riding on the tube.  Nurse Nancy has learned to remain absolutely still so there are no growls from the peanut gallery.

This doggie saga is kind of boring, so I'll relate more ranch stories tomorrow since I can't go anywhere and leave the kid alone just yet.  Just another observation ... it rained yesterday.  What's up with that???

    1. The casserole is really easy to make, especially with already cooked chicken.

  3. The amount they are talking about for reparations out there is ridiculous. I had not heard that about insurance but it certainly does not surprise me.

    1. Seems everyone is out for the big bucks ... making those that work pay for those that WON'T work. It's sad and frustrating.

  4. A note for Mr. Ed. What makes you think you’re the only one dealing with the high cost of insurance try buying Or building a house in Florida and putting insurance on it and to make matters even worse for some people if you have solar on your house, they won’t insure you . Will you get to Arizona as Mr. C how much of a percentage his insurance his cost him over the last five years … you might wanna take a page out of his book as to why he moved … Hurricane did extensive damage on the west coast of Florida so if you live in the north, the south of the East you’re paying for it . insurance companies are NOT in the business to lose money it’s not profitable Think of insurance companies as casinos The odds are you can’t beat the house
    NOTE
Between July 2021 and July 2022, California lost roughly 211,000 people according to data from California's Department of Finance. Half of those — 113,048, were from Los Angeles County alone. Los Angeles County — California's largest county — lost around 160,000 in the last 12 months with most leaving for other states.
    NOTE
A 2022 report by the Hoover Institution shows 352 businesses leaving California and moving their headquarters to a different state between 2018 and 2022. High rent, high taxes, high costs of living for employees, and red tape are just a few reasons why. Curious where everyone is headed? 2023 figures are not in yet
If you look at the population ethnic you’ll find it 53% Mexican live in your California town opposed to 13% live in your Arizona town. At your next bingo game, find a Mexican/s that drives in And parks his Lexus/King ranch And find out how he gets his free money I’d like to know his game
You have a house in California you have a house in Arizona All one has to do is sit down and do a cost comparison (as you quote, you could turn the air conditioning on )you choose to have both, so pay The fiddler or move……. Or in five words or less … make California a/your domicile
You have a fifth wheel a membership to FMCA Buying into there park and you’re all set Domicile done deal Think of the savings that you could spend on fabric

    1. Wow!! Sounds like Florida is as bad as California. Maybe you should move here. If you want free money, they have lots of it to give away from the pockets of working people, which is why so many of them are moving away. 700,000 according to the Los Angeles Times.

    1. I don't know how they can possibly keep it up with so many people leaving. They are already in the hole a ridiculous amount. They can't keep going like this.

  6. That Cooper is a trooper! I've had 1 tooth pulled at a time but for him to have 6-7 pulled at the same time....HIGH FIVE !!
Maybe cat food has more flavors to choose from?

  7. Never heard of "Hatch" brand...I'll have to look into getting some Hatch Green Chile Enchilada Sauce. Do you use the mild or medium...do they make a hot, Arny would want "HOT" if they make it. Glad Cooper is doing well.

    1. I buy the mild and it's a bit spicy, but I'm a lightweight. LOVE it!! I think they only have mild and hot. Your store might have more options. It's a yellow and green can.

  8. If dogs only could talk. I totally understand you trying to do everything possible for Cooper to get well again. He might have had discomfort before while chewing on food and that reflecting on not being interested in it. Interesting facts about California we Canadians don't know. Good thing you also have a home in Arizona.

    1. I'm extremely lucky to be able to experience both states. The trouble is both have such good sides that I can't decide where to stay!! Both also have bad sides.

  9. I've enjoyed reading your blog for several years. Happy to read Cooper is feeling better & is eating. We're Canadian Snowbirds & winter in AZ. Last week, I read about State Farm no longer writing policies in California. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the beginning of huge changes to the Insurance industry in the States & Canada. Both countries have had more severe damage from hail, tornadoes, hurricanes floods, & fires over the past 10 years or so.

    1. Hi Jody .... nice to meet you!!! I think you are right when it comes to insurance. Lots of damage they didn't plan for, so their profits aren't as high. Seems pretty greedy to me, but I haven't seen the numbers.

  10. Insurance companies are pyramid schemes. Lots of promises, when taking your money, for not great service when you need to file a claim. They are about making money, not giving it away. Like car insurance they force you to buy if you want to drive/own a car, but not for illegals. No, you have to buy uninsured motorist insurance to protect yourself from them when they don't drive/live by the rules. The homeowner's insurance is insane. Now more than my taxes X2. Then after a claim they don't renew your policy, cancelling yours & if you go a find a new company & start if before the old one finishes, they'll say YOU cancelled it. Which in the long run, your permanent record of insurance, makes it seem like these cancellations are your fault, not theirs. TH insurance cancelled me because of "Hurricanes". I live in FLORIDA. Hello!? So I got V insurance to start when the old ran out. Then I get a letter from TH saying they're not allowed to cancel people within a certain timeframe from the hurricane & do I want to go back to them. No, YOU didn't renew ME and I pay by the year for a good discount. Now V has not renewed after two or three years of taking my money because of "hurricanes". Excuse me, this is Florida, why were you even here in the first place. So now I have TH insurance again. Even though it's still Florida. I just don't get it.

    1. That's crazy. It's probably the same with earthquake insurance here. Lucky for me, I don't live in either an earthquake or flood zone, or my insurance would also be ridiculously high. And you are right ... they don't want to pay out when you file a claim.
