I know Chicken Little is running around saying the sky is falling, but truthfully, that's not going to happen. No matter who wins the election, life as we know it will go on because these individuals represented here made it possible for us to live in a free country.
There aren't many that I knew personally, so wasn't I surprised when I ran into Michael Dragovich on my first walk through. We were childhood friends before his service. Later in life, he fought another valiant fight against Lou Gehrig's disease. He always made me smile .... and still does.
Right next door was my good friend's son who is currently serving in Germany. In case you didn't know, every flag here has an individuals name on it, most including a picture.
This is his father, who served in the Navy. I worked with him at the County Office Building for years before I met his daughter, who worked with me for eleven years. As I walked around, I was amazed at the number of people from this small town who helped make our freedom possible.
You too can participate in this week-long recognition of the community heroes, by purchasing a flag for $35. Every year you bring it back and it will be displayed along with thousands of others.
This is not just for military personnel ... police officers and first responders are also honored. Several Flags of Honor are flown for those who lost their lives on September 11, along with Flags of Heroes who lost their lives trying to save others.
As the sun went down, a spectacular sunset appeared over the field and lasted longer than any I've seen before.
Chicken Little can run around all he wants to, because in spite of all the political malarky, there will always be men and women like you and me who will fight to keep this country free. Do your part and vote your preference. America will go on. Maybe you'll pay more taxes, maybe not, but it's worth it to live in this beautiful country of ours.
When the sun disappeared, banks of lights were turned on, keeping the field lit up all night. I love our red, white and blue. Isn't she beautiful??
They are having an honor ceremony here in our complex on Nov 11th. My husband doesn't think he deserves recognition for serving for nearly four years including a year in Viet Nam. That's just what guys did then. And now. He also was awarded a purple heart which he never wore because the paperwork for it never came though. I think he was actually relieved about that. After all, taking en enemy bullet in the leg was no big deal, right?
ReplyDeleteLinda, it's a very sad thing that our Viet Nam Veterans feel that way. I think they were told so many times upon their return how terrible they were, that they feel guilty for having participated. I see that in many of my high school classmates. He should truly stand up and be counted and he should DEFINITELY receive that purple heart. It IS a big deal ... and he should be highly commended for his service!!
